Oral Hygiene Therapies

Here at Chapel Dental Care we have three hygienist/therapists who concentrate on oral hygiene therapy along with other procedures. Our dental therapist will provide regular cleaning and polishing therapies along with oral hygiene advice as required to ensure that you keep a healthy smile. We offer many types of cleaning.

Simple scale and polish-which involves using a ultrasonic scaler to remove hard deposits of calculus from the teeth, these are the deposits that have built up over a period of time and cannot be removed with your toothbrush.

Deep Scaling with Root Plane Debridement -Root Surface debridement (RSD) is the careful cleaning of the root surface of the tooth until all deposits have been removed. If gum disease becomes established deep pockets of 5mm or more may develop and become an ideal environment for bacteria and act as a reservoir of infective organisms. Calcified deposits (calculus) in these pockets make the tooth surface rough so it is harder to keep clean and bacteria collect more readily. RSD requires a much longer appointment especially if there are a number of deep pockets and it is often necessary to organise a sequence of appointments so that all the pockets can be cleaned. This prevents re-infection from pockets that have yet to be treated. The aim of the treatment is reattachment of the gum to the tooth so that the pocket will be no more than 3mm. If this can be achieved on all teeth the gum health can be considered stable.

Stain removal (Prophyflex) – Prophyflex system is a handpiece that distributes powder particles to remove stain and polish the tooth surfaces. The air abrasion system is similar to that of a 'jetwash' concept, blasting particles at speed onto the tooth surface. The results can create a much brighter smile by polishing and removing stains.
